VoIP

August 20th, 2007

combuild.jpgVoIP (phone over internet) has become very popular in the last few years. It started out with a lot of small start-up companies. They offered a great service at a decent price and quickly attracted a large customer base. But as things have worked in the past, things work today.

In the past year internet service providers have began to shift a lot of their focus towards voice over internet protocol also. Companies like Comcast can easily offer a great VoIP service over their own cable lines, which many people prefer.

These big companies, being able to focus so many of their resources in advertising their VoIP services make it real difficult for smaller VoIP only companies to stay afloat. Comcast could have definitely been a key factor in the fall of SunRocket and is a major cause to the fact that Vonage is also hurting.

In fact, Comcast has recently passed up Vonage as the company with the most subscriber lines. With plans like Comcast’s “Triple Play” it’s hard to go anywhere else.

Only time will tell if these smaller VoIP specified companies will be able to keep competing with the big dogs, but one thing is for sure, it will be a tough ride.

Comcast Cable Speeds

August 15th, 2007

comcast-black.jpgIt seemed like not too long ago when the internet was just beginning to widely and publicly emerge. Most of us remember the days when dial-up was the best thing available. And who could forget the 56k modem. It’s not that we’re all old, it just simply wasn’t that long ago. Now there are several companies out there coming up with all kinds of new offers.

We have higher grades of dial up. There’s DSL. And then there’s the internet speed demon… Cable. Cable offers the fastest connection speed available and it doesn’t matter how far you are from the provider’s server, your connection speed will be the same. With advancing technology it has and continues to become more important to have higher download speeds.

Comcast has continually stepped up to the plate to make these increasing demands a reality. Comcast cable speeds have constantly increased over the last few years. Right now Comcast offers cable internet connections of up to 16Mbps. In many areas they offer special features such as home networking of up to 5 computers on your service line, free virus scan and parental controls, up to seven e-mail accounts and more.

Comcast has also won many awards in the past few years including the CompUSA Vender of the Year award in 2005 and the #1 rated ISP by San Jose Mercury News.

Comcast is offering some great promotions right now to help everybody feel the benefits of an affordable, reliable, and fast connection. You can check out a few of these promotions here. Now is a great time to take advantage of cable. You’ve waited this long. Why wait any longer?

Verizon Makes It Even Easier

August 13th, 2007

verizon_cell_phone.jpgVerizon is now making it even easier to upload videos to YouTube. YouTube, which launched in 2005 made it very easy to upload and watch videos in a community setting. With Verizon’s help, it’s now ‘dangerously’easy to post a video.

If you have a Verizon phone, all you have to do to upload is

1) Record a video

2) Enter a code on the phone “YTUBE” and it uploads

This is possible because the phone uses Verizon’s wireless broadband network. So in just a few steps and a quick upload, you can put anything you want on YouTube in a matter of seconds. This is an awesome feature which Verizon is offering, but a bit interesting. Never before has it been so easy to give access to something to such a large group in such a short amount of time. While it will enable some people to record and upload amazing sights and events and upload them immediately, it will also enable people to record videos of embarrassing moments in other peoples lives for instant upload.

For the average high-schooler, this could mean that if you tripped in the hall in the afternoon, everyone could be watching it online before you even get home. For your average boss, it means that anyone out to get him can be waiting with their Verizon phone and catch the first politically incorrect thing he says and post it immediately. One thing’s for sure, privacy is sure on the way out and thanks to Verizon’s wireless broadband we will be able to see many new interesting videos on YouTube.

Verizon Quarterly Report Looks Good

August 10th, 2007

Verizon’s quarterly report looked very good as it was released earlier this week. The company continues to grow in sales and volume. The second quarter report was two point four percent (2.4%) above last years second quarter numbers. Some of the new services the company has began to offer has helped their growth.

The total revenue was a massive $5.3 billion. That created a net profit of $1.68 billion or 58 cents a share making investors happy. The results were on with the companies estimates and things are looking optimistic for the future.

The next quarter’s figures will be somewhat affected by how well new services such as Ethernet continue to sell. The lawsuit with Vonage about infringed patents could also hurt or help. Rumors state that a decision could be final as early as September, but at this point everything is nothing more than speculation. Either way things go, the company will continue to grow.verizon-online-dsl.gif

One of Verizon’s current most popular deals is a DSL service for only 14.99 a month for the first 12 months making it one of the cheapest and most realiable DSL connections available. It’s easy to install and comes with a free modem.

Comcast Cable Internet $19.99

August 8th, 2007

comcast.gifRight now Comcast is offering a very high speed cable connection at a very affordable price. Right now, Comcast is offering a cable connection of up to 8.0 Mbps for only $19.99 for the first 6 months. This is about half the price of an average cable connection and comes with the same features and reliability. This offer also comes with a free cable modem and wireless router to get started. On top of all that it comes with free digital music and videos and to top it all off $125 cash back. This is a fantastic value.

For those who don’t have cable internet, cable TV, or digital phone service, Comcast is also making another offer. It’s called “Comcast Triple Play” and has turned out to be a very popular promotion. The idea behind the Triple Play is that each of the three services (TV, Internet, and Phone) are offered at $33/each per month or $99 per month for all. This package deal is a great value. If you order triple play right now, you can get $335 in rebates. It also comes with a free cable modem, wireless router, and multimedia package.

Both of these promotions are great. If you have none of these services as of now, the “Triple Play” is tough to beat. If the only thing lacking is a better internet connection, the $19.99 promotion is the best option. Either way you decide to go, Comcast is there offering superb service at a great price.

Cable vs DSL

August 2nd, 2007

I have heard a lot talk lately where people have battled out over which is better, cable or DSL. One person says “cable is faster” another “DSL is cheaper”. It seems to never really have an end. So, which one is better. Well, both and neither. Let’s analyze.

It is true, cable connections are capable of having higher speeds. This is very beneficial but often times unnecessary for just a common household. Although it is nice to have a higher download speed, there isn’t much difference between driving 140mph and 170mph. Speed is speed and that’s fast.

Best price is a category won by DSL. It is generally cheaper than cable since it is slightly slower. A lot of people feel that it is not worth it to pay so much extra money every month to have a connection that is just a little faster.

Customer satisfaction is also a category won by DSL. Tech support generally seems to be more helpful and able to help. Some people with cable constantly have issues in this and switch over to DSL.

They both have their advantages as far as security goes.

So basically, it can be hard to say one is better than the other. They are 2 different products that work in 2 different ways. DSL works through your telephone jack, and cable….well through cable. They are both very popular services and both have many many customers. Just figure out which one is best for you and that’s what’s best.
