VoIP
VoIP (phone over internet) has become very popular in the last few years. It started out with a lot of small start-up companies. They offered a great service at a decent price and quickly attracted a large customer base. But as things have worked in the past, things work today.
In the past year internet service providers have began to shift a lot of their focus towards voice over internet protocol also. Companies like Comcast can easily offer a great VoIP service over their own cable lines, which many people prefer.
These big companies, being able to focus so many of their resources in advertising their VoIP services make it real difficult for smaller VoIP only companies to stay afloat. Comcast could have definitely been a key factor in the fall of SunRocket and is a major cause to the fact that Vonage is also hurting.
In fact, Comcast has recently passed up Vonage as the company with the most subscriber lines. With plans like Comcast’s “Triple Play” it’s hard to go anywhere else.
Only time will tell if these smaller VoIP specified companies will be able to keep competing with the big dogs, but one thing is for sure, it will be a tough ride.
